Step back in time at Copalita’s ruins

Comfortable air-conditioned transportation will take you to the ruins of Bocana del Rio Copalita, which were discovered in 1996 deep within the lush jungles of Oaxaca. Settled around 500 BCE, the ruins were inhabited by different natives of Mexico, including the Chichimecas, Zapotecs, Mixtecs and Aztecs, until the Spanish settlers’ arrival in the 1500s. Excavations uncovered a town that once sustained 2,000 inhabitants in a 30-hectare area. Today, this area is open for exploration and includes plazas, temples and a ceremonial center, all surrounded by a lush forest filled with native birds of Huatulco — an added bonus for bird lovers.

Uncover the birds of Huatulco

At Bocana del Rio Copalita, you can also visit the park’s museum, which details the history of the people and the area. Follow the expansive trails that traverse hillsides and wetlands with views of the ocean and the river. As you walk, you’ll discover rich flora and fauna, including a wide array of colorful birds that call the area home. Try to spot as many birds of Huatulco as possible, before your comfortable vehicle takes you back to your resort.
