Irazu Volcano and Orosi Valley Tour from San José

The Irazu Volcano and Orosi Valley Tour begins early from San José, heading south along the Pan American Highway. As you ascend, you pass farmland where potatoes, onions, and garlic grow in volcanic soil. The route gradually climbs, and the air becomes cooler as you approach higher elevations.

At Irazu Volcano National Park, you reach 3,432 meters above sea level. You walk to viewpoints overlooking the main craters, including Irazú, Playa Hermosa, and Diego de la Haya. On clear days, you may see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Cartago Basilica and Lankester Botanical Garden

After visiting the volcano, you continue to Cartago, the former capital of Costa Rica. You stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, an important religious site visited by thousands each year. Inside, you observe its structure and learn about its role in local tradition and history.

The tour then moves to Lankester Botanical Garden, managed by the University of Costa Rica. Here, you walk through curated sections that display orchids, bromeliads, and native plants. The garden provides a clear look at the country’s plant diversity and conservation efforts.

Orosi Valley, Ruins of Ujarrás, and Local Lunch

The final part of the Irazu Volcano and Orosi Valley Tour takes you into the Orosi Valley. This area is known for its agricultural land, coffee plantations, and mountain views. The pace slows, allowing you to observe daily life outside the city.

You visit the Ruins of Ujarrás, one of the oldest churches in the country, before stopping for a traditional Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant. After the meal, you return to San José, completing a day that combines elevation, culture, and regional identity.
