Headline

Ancient wonders await in the heart of the Yucatan jungle. Go from exploring the archaeological ruins of Ek-Balam — one of the most captivating Maya sites in Mexico — to having a swim at the sacred waters of a Maya cenote (sinkhole), all in one full day of adventure. A knowledgeable guide, a buffet lunch and comfortable transportation complete your visit to these magical places.

Description

Digging around Ek-Balam’s history

After a comfortable transfer picks you up from your resort, you’ll arrive at Ek-Balam archaeological site, whose name means ‘Star Jaguar’ in Mayan. It’s a fittingly majestic name considering this site was home to king Uk’it Kan Lec Tok, buried in the side of the largest pyramid.

Your bilingual guide will take you precisely to this Maya king’s well-preserved grave, which boasts amazing motifs and carvings, plus an offering of more than 7,000 pieces of jewelry dating back 1,000 years.

Climb toward great heights

If you want to go the extra mile, and we recommend you do so, take a hike up the steps of Ek-Balam’s 112-foot acropolis — which is actually a pyramid with a tomb on top — for some fascinating scenery of the surrounding jungle.

The visit would not be complete without admiring some recently restored structures like the Observatory and the Twin House, two of the main attractions of this once-bustling city.

Soak in your Ek-Balam cenote Maya tour

After your guided visit of ancient wonders in Ek-Balam, a sacred Maya cenote will be the next part of your tour. Take a refreshing dip in the cenote’s crystal clear waters and admire its wonderful natural formations. This will affirm why the ancient Maya people of Yucatan thought cenotes were portals that connected them with their gods.

Top off your full day of magical exploration over a homemade lunch in cozy outdoor surroundings before heading back to your resort.
