Description

Discover an almost private oasis

Hidden in the Mayan jungle, Chaak Tun is still relatively unknown and it’ll give you an almost private experience compared to other crowded cenotes. Round-trip, air-conditioned transportation will take you from your resort to these freshwater cenotes, which you’ll access through a long wooden platform that crosses part of the Riviera Maya’s jungle paths.

Strap on your gear and wade through crystalline water as you travel back in time by gazing upon centuries-old stalagmites and stalactites. Flash your headlamp onto the caves’ pillars and create ripples of light on the walls. Follow the illuminated path into the twisting cave as the faint squeaks of bats welcome you into their home.

Enter into ‘Xibalba’, the Mayan underworld

The second cenote is accessible through a spiral staircase. As you marvel at nature’s design, you’ll learn about Mayan tradition, myths, and sacred beliefs all hidden within this powerful place. For the ancient Mayans, bodies of water like cenotes and the ocean were sacred portals to the underworld, which they called ‘Xibalba’.

Upon entering this second cenote, you’ll see a Mayan altar where ceremonial acts were performed. This unique piece stands as a testament to the importance Mayans placed on the cenotes. When you come back above ground and into the sunlight, say goodbye to your guides and hop on your vehicle to head back to your resort before evening time.
