"We booked at day trip to Santa Domingo at the Barceló Dominican Beach resort through Apple Vacations/Amstar.
The large bus met us in front of our resort early in the morning. Our tour guide, Dario did a great job walking around to various sites in old Santa Domingo. He spoke English very well and always made sure the entire group was together. The bus driver, Martin was helpful and drove very safe.
On the way there we stopped for a restroom break. There was also a coffee/ice cream shop, liquor store and cigar factory. Not much top to shop around. Places that we visited included Catedral Primada de America and other churches, and several museums including the home of Columbus's family. We saw the oldest house, church, street, and library in the Americas. We drove past the National Palace but could not stop because the president (or somebody) was going to be taking off in their helicopters. We also visited a jewelry factory/store. We stopped for a buffet lunch. Food was good but I wish it were someplace older with more atmosphere.
On the way back we stopped at the Columbus Lighthouse. It cost $3 to go inside (not included in the tour but it should be). We made another restroom stop at the same place we stopped on the way to Santa Domingo. This stop we had more time to shop around. Good prices on Santa Domingo products.
Overall we thought the tour was well organized and very educational. We especially liked the wireless headphones they gave us at several of the sites. We could all hear the various tour guides no matter where we were standing."
