The secret to world-class customer service is passion and dedication. That is what Michelle Sterling’s 26 years of experience in service have taught us.
Her dedication and love for her work recently earned Michelle a special recognition from Jamaica’s Tourism Board during the Tourism Excellence Awards.
Let’s get to know Michelle a bit better!
Tell us a bit about you, Michelle:
I am the second to last child in a family of 7 kids. I was born in New Castle, Jamaica.
I’m an extrovert, people-person and a Gemini. I’m a workaholic, even though I sometimes deny that fact. I love meeting people, being among our guests. As a team leader here in Jamaica I enjoy that tremendously, I look forward to work each day as that’s the air I breathe.
What do you do during your free time?
I always have to be doing something. During my free time, I play netball, I do track and love to do long walks, read, travel, meet people and volunteer.
My favorite part of netball is that it is a team sport and if the game is not played as a team, goals are not scored. As far as track, I love seeing people give their best and seeing their determination to get to the finish line.
My husband, my son and I are regulars at beach cleanups, charity races and community efforts. We participate in a food program for the less fortunate, a Christmas treat for children in the Special Education Unit at my son’s school and every year, we also go into the community to feed elderly folks.
We are also starting a program to teach unemployed parents a skill to help them get employed through my son’s Parent-Teacher Association.
In addition, we will offer basic Spanish, math and reading classes to those parents who are unable to help their children with homework.
When did you start working at Amstar DMC?
I began my career with Amstar DMC in 1995. During this time, I was promoted as Team Leader and recognized with several awards along the way.
Do you have any special memories during your time at Amstar?
I have collected quite a few magical moments. Among my top favorite is the time I travelled with Business Development Stuart Palmer promoting Jamaica and Amstar with the company’s top travel agents.
On another occasion, I was asked to be the maid of honor for a client that I met while I was an Apple Rep. The couple visited the resort where I was a Rep and decided they wanted to get married there. The following year, the wedding was held and the bride asked me to be her maid of honor. The happy couple have been coming back to Jamaica ever since and keep a tight communication with me.
What are your 3 favorite places in Jamaica?
What do I recommend you see when you visit Jamaica?
1. Dunn’s River Falls – You can’t visit Jamaica and not go to one of the most iconic places of my country. This place is beautiful and a must-see.
2. Luminous lagoon – This is one of the most unique places on Earth. I don’t think there’s nothing like this on this side of the hemisphere.
3. Blue hole – This is one of the best-kept secrets in Jamaica. The waters here are truly amazing, refreshing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
What’s on your travel bucket-list?
Working in the travel industry, I have my own travel wish list:
1. Japan, to see the technology side of the world
2. Dubai, to see the new generation of innovation
3. Mexico, to experience Cancun – Riviera Maya
