The end of July saw the conclusion of an inspiring environmental project on the island of Isla Mujeres—Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is an ambitious project that brought some of the world’s top street artists to this beautiful tropical island off of the coast of Cancun.
Their mission: to increase awareness and conservation efforts for the majestic whale shark. If you are an art lover and looking for a wonderful island experience, this is a stop you won’t want to miss on your next trip to Cancun or the Riviera Maya.
PangeaSeed is the brain behind the ground-breaking street art project Sea Walls: Murals for Ocean created in order to bring the beauty and the plight of the world’s oceans into streets around the globe.
A mix of public art and activist, some of today’s top contemporary street artists came together on Isla Mujeres to produce over 14 incredible large scale murals on diverse buildings and streets in Isla Mujeres.
Inspired by their interaction with the world’s largest fish, the artists then created beautiful murals throughout different parts of the island in order to help raise awareness about the difficulties facing the whale shark and the plight of the world’s oceans.
For Mexico City-based urban artist Saner, Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is an important social act that can help to raise consciousness about the need to protect the oceans and the marine life that call them home.
“Sea Walls helps create a sense of global belonging and the need to do something about an issue that affects everyone,” said Saner.
When asked about his mural, which depicts the Mayan goddess of fertility extending her hands out to a heart, Saner explained it this way:
“The heart represents the purity that is in all of us. It’s part of what we need to conserve.”
